Coastal communities in southeast New Brunswick, particularly in the Cocagne watershed region, are affected by increasingly frequent storm surges, freezing rain and drought events. Residents of Cocagne and Grande-Digue are also at risk of adverse health effects from saltwater contamination of their private water wells. With the help of the Pays de Cocagne Sustainable Development Group (GDDPC) and researchers from the Université de Moncton, residents in the Cocagne watershed region have been tackling climate change, and gaining expertise and deeper understanding about this issue in the process. The GDDPC’s main mandate is to protect the Cocagne River and Bay watershed ecozone through a network of key players and numerous partnerships. This mandate also includes participating in local governance and provincial public policy development, including climate change mitigation and adaptation planning.
