The Nanaimo Regional General Hospital in British Columbia has undergone various renovations and added an emergency department in order to prepare for future climate change impacts and risks. Sustainability measures (e.g., use of day light and natural light, natural ventilation, solar shading, extra roof insulation, etc.) were adopted for the building’s design to encourage lower use of electricity, improve patient outcomes, and stress levels in staff. There is also a heat recovery chiller that provides opportunity to heat the exterior of hospital zones during extreme weather events.
