The impacts of climate change are already being felt in the Kootenay Region of British Columbia and are expected to increase over time. Impacts include increases in the number and severity of wildfires and extreme weather events, as well as changes in the landscape. Kootenay communities also have unique, place-based assets that have strengthened their adaptive capacity, particularly in the form of local expertise and partner organizations like the Columbia Basin Rural Development Institute (RDI) and the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT). In 2014, the RDI partnered with the CBT to explore how communities could measure their progress in adapting to climate change, resulting in the State of Climate Adaptation and Resilience in the Basin (SoCARB) indicator suite. SoCARB took a comprehensive view of adaptation by linking climate change indicators to indicators of environmental and community impacts, which were in turn linked to indicators of adaptation actions and capacity.
